Five Different Gestures Against a Rough Stone Wall

Five people, five different gestures. I came across this group on a hot, sunny summer day at Wasaga Beach in Ontario in 2011. Their changing expressions caught my attention, and I made this black and white photograph with the rough stone wall giving the figures a simple background.

The man at the left leans toward the camera with his mouth open and a towel around his neck. Beside him, another stands more upright. The shirtless figure near the centre turns with a ball in hand, while the man in the tank top faces outward holding a drink. At the far right, a profile closes the group. I liked how none of them occupied the moment in quite the same way.

The wall's broad stone courses keep that irregular rhythm easy to follow. Strong summer light separates pale shirts, bare skin and dark shorts, while shadows cross the pavement below. I included their full figures so that posture and stance remain as important as facial expression. The differences between them carry the composition.

In monochrome, I can move from one person to the next without clothing colours dominating the view. What stayed with me was the feeling of several individual photographs contained within a single frame. A longer look offers another hand position, tilted head or shift in weight. The image preserves an ordinary summer gathering through the small, simultaneous gestures that made me raise the camera.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
