Close Sterns Beneath a Dense Network of Masts
The sterns of two fishing boats sit close together at the front of this British Columbia harbour photograph. Behind them, more vessels fill the frame with masts, crossbars, cables and working equipment. I wanted to bring the boats’ detailed arrangement into view, and the vertical composition allows the eye to travel from the waterline to the rigging above. The pale hulls provide a clear starting point within a much denser scene.
Ropes and fenders hang along the sterns, while coils, covered equipment and metal rails occupy the decks. Higher up, the rigging creates a web of thin diagonals around the stronger upright masts. I find that mixture of straight lines and curved rope particularly absorbing. Each part belongs to a practical vessel, yet together they make an intricate visual pattern. In black and white, differences in brightness help separate the layers without simplifying away their detail.
A narrow area of water at the bottom reflects the nearest hulls, and a wooded slope remains visible through the rigging in the distance. Those small openings establish the harbour setting while keeping the boats as the main subject. My photograph is for someone who enjoys looking closely at working vessels and the equipment they carry. As a maritime print, it could sit alongside coastal views or bring a more detailed nautical subject to a room with otherwise simple surfaces.
