Raised Lettering Follows A Broad Curve Around Reflective Chrome
The lettering follows the tyre's curve so neatly that I first see a pattern, then a name. Firestone Deluxe Champion is embossed into the broad whitewall, beside a dark band of rubber and reflective chrome. I photographed this detail at a vintage car gathering, drawn to the contrast between those surfaces and the way they fit together.
The wheel is cropped at the left edge, allowing the large arc to carry the square composition. Across the top and right, a pale body panel provides a simpler area of tone. I like how that open surface gives the tyre room without separating it from the car.
Black and white makes the changes between materials especially clear. The whitewall holds small shadows around the raised letters, the rubber introduces a repeated ridged texture, and the chrome catches darker reflections. Each part has a different finish, yet all follow the same curved arrangement.
At the gathering, complete vehicles offered plenty to photograph, but this small detail held my attention on its own. I could leave the make and model of the car outside the frame and still retain a strong automotive identity. The tyre, lettering, and polished wheel create a close view with both a clear subject and a graphic structure. Looking longer brings me back to the subtle marks in the white surface and the brighter lines of chrome around it.
