Weathered Farm Buildings Beneath a Broad Pale Sky
Two substantial barns form the centre of this rural Maine view, with a small open-sided shelter standing closer in the field. I photographed the farm in 2018, interested in how the different roof shapes sit together against a distant line of trees. The open ground gives each building room within the composition, while the pale sky holds a generous space above them.
The barn on the left has a deep roof with a change in slope, and small windows break up its darker front. Beside it, the taller gabled building carries a cupola near the ridge. I like the way those two silhouettes answer one another. The smaller shelter introduces a brighter sloping roof in the foreground, creating a third point in the arrangement. Fences and low outbuildings extend the scene towards either edge.
Black and white brings out the varied surfaces of the timber and roofs while keeping the wider landscape restrained. The field has a fine, uneven texture, and the treeline makes a darker horizontal band behind the farm. For me, this is a photograph about the shape of a rural place: buildings grouped together, open land around them and a broad sky overhead. As a print, it offers a quiet New England farm scene with clear architectural detail and a settled composition, suited to a wall display centred on country landscapes.
