Wooden Rails and Quiet Farm Buildings Across a Hillside
Wooden fences repeat across a gently rising hillside in northern Romania. Small farm buildings sit among the rails, and a cluster of trees marks the crest beneath a clear sky. I photographed the landscape in black and white, drawn to the way simple working structures could create such a strong pattern across open land.
The nearest fence is easy to read as individual posts and rough rails. Its shadow falls onto the short ground cover, adding another set of lines below it. Farther up the slope, the fencing becomes finer and more closely spaced, turning into a web of divisions that follows the hill. Some posts lean slightly, keeping the repetition from feeling too exact.
I worked the composition slowly from the field, looking for a balance between that busy foreground and the much quieter skyline. A small roof near the top provides a point of focus, while the trees beside it rise above the lower lines of the fences. Their branches introduce a softer texture without disturbing the photograph’s clear structure.
Made in 2011, this image holds the rural landscape through its everyday materials rather than a dramatic view. The monochrome treatment gives the weathered wood, grass and open sky their own tones, allowing the fence pattern to remain the central subject. For someone drawn to countryside photography, modest farm scenes or natural geometry, it can bring a settled rhythm to a study or living space, with details that remain interesting after the first impression.
