A Winding Walkway Linking Guard Towers Across the Hills
The Great Wall of China begins here with stone steps close enough to study, then winds across a series of hills toward distant guard towers. I photographed this view in black and white, drawn to the way a built path follows the changing shape of the mountain ridges. The open walkway makes the route easy to imagine, even as it becomes smaller in the distance.
The near wall sweeps across the foreground, its bricks and mortar joints clearly visible. Beside it, broad steps descend before the path turns and climbs again. Farther along, a small roofed structure marks a bend, and larger towers punctuate the ridge above. These changes in level keep the eye moving through the scene rather than stopping at a single landmark.
I like how the wall can be read at two scales. Up close, it is a surface of individual blocks, edges and worn paving. Across the hillside, those separate elements gather into one pale line. The surrounding scrub and rocky ground have a looser texture, which helps the masonry stand apart without feeling detached from the landscape.
Made in 2015, the photograph reflects my interest in exploring a place through the route it offers. Its appeal lies in the visible steps as much as the distant towers. For someone who loves travel photography, historic architecture or mountain settings, this image can bring a sense of onward movement to a hallway or study, with the detailed foreground leading toward the quieter horizon.
