Quiet Dubrovnik Old Town Street in January Black and White Photography
Stone Passage and Hanging Garlands in Winter Dubrovnik
In January, Dubrovnik’s Old Town offered a quieter view than the crowded streets I associated with summer. This black and white photograph follows an empty stone passage beneath hanging garlands and wall lanterns. I made it in 2020, drawn to the chance to see the buildings and paving without the usual activity filling the space.
The long line of pale paving through the centre gives the eye a direct route down the street. Around it, the larger stone blocks vary in tone and texture, some bright and smooth, others darker and more marked. Close-set buildings rise on both sides, with arched openings and projecting fixtures breaking the repeated masonry. The garlands cross overhead at intervals, adding a softer curve to the strong lines of the passage.
I like the way the seasonal decorations remain while the street itself is still. They suggest recent celebrations, but the photograph’s mood comes from the open walkway and the quiet light along its middle. Monochrome brings the different stone surfaces into focus, allowing the walls and ground to share a clear visual rhythm. Even the small lanterns become useful markers as the view recedes.
For someone who loves Croatia’s old towns or architectural street photography, this image offers a calm, detailed view of Dubrovnik. It can give a hallway or study a sense of depth and a place to let the eye wander. The winter setting remains part of its character: familiar architecture, a little seasonal decoration and room to notice the city at rest.
