Sunlit Turquoise Walls Along an Empty Havana Street
White lettering reading “Viva Fidel” runs along the base of a turquoise building in this Havana street photograph. I made the image looking down the empty road, with tall barred entrances close to the camera and a succession of smaller facades receding into the distance. The writing is one detail within a much larger arrangement of colour, light, and architecture.
Strong sunlight cuts across the turquoise wall in angular patches. Those bright shapes sit beside darker doorway recesses and fine ironwork, giving the nearest building a clear sense of depth. Its worn lower surfaces add another texture, with peeling areas and uneven edges visible beneath the paint. I like how the light makes the decorative forms easier to read while leaving the street itself open and simple.
Farther along, warm yellow and orange sections break up the cool colour. Balconies, overhead wires, and repeated entrances lead the eye toward the left edge, where the buildings become smaller and more closely packed. That perspective lets the photograph move between an architectural detail and a wider street scene.
I wanted to keep the lettering as I encountered it, part of the visible character of this Cuban street. The image does not need an imagined story behind the walls to hold attention. The combination of painted words, weathered surfaces, and an unoccupied stretch of road gives it a specific sense of place. It preserves the scene through its physical details, including the colour that first makes the facade stand out.
