Cuban Man in a Weathered Doorway Black and White Portrait Photography
A Raised Hand Within The Full Darkened Entrance
One hand rests beside his face as he stands just inside the doorway. I photographed this older man in Cuba, keeping his full figure and the worn entrance around him in the black and white frame. A brimmed hat and pale striped shirt separate him from the darker interior.
I wanted the architecture to remain a substantial part of the portrait. The open wooden door at the left, rough plaster at the right and uneven threshold below form a clear enclosure around the man. The empty dark space beside him gives the small hand gesture more room to register.
Light entering from the street reveals the face, forearm and shirt while much of the room stays in shadow. His gaze goes beyond the camera, leaving the moment unresolved. The horizontal stripes provide a quieter pattern within the taller lines of the door and wall.
I like the balance between a recognisable person and a tangible setting. Fine details in the worn wood and chipped surfaces are still present, but they lead attention back toward his face and raised hand. Black and white keeps the light-and-shadow division clear without separating the figure from the building. For me, the photograph holds an ordinary doorway moment in Cuba, where a small gesture gives a larger architectural frame its human focus.
