Sunlit Granite Spires Against a Dark Cloud Bank
Sunlight reaches the sharp Eastern Sierra peaks beneath a deep blue-grey cloud bank. In front of them, rounded Alabama Hills boulders hold a warmer, earthier colour. I photographed this mountain scene in 2009, drawn to the contrast between two very different forms of stone and the light separating them.
The distant ridge is all steep faces, narrow spires and deep cuts. Bright granite stands out against the darker slopes below, making the peaks feel distinct even within a crowded skyline. The cloud above is softer and broader, with a pale upper layer rolling into a much darker band just behind the mountains.
In the foreground, the boulders have a lower, more rounded rhythm. Their broken edges and shadowed gaps are substantial enough to balance the distant heights. I like the way that nearby stone provides a place to begin looking before the eye climbs through the middle distance and reaches the illuminated ridge.
Colour matters here because the mood rests on those changes in temperature: warm rock below, pale sunlight across the peaks and cool weather overhead. The photograph holds the moment when heavy cloud and clear illumination share the same view.
