Dry Tortugas Driftwood Roots in Shallow Water Black and White Photography

Weathered Roots and Dark Shadows Across the Clear Shoreline

A weathered stump and its exposed roots stand in the shallow water at Dry Tortugas. The pale wood reaches outward in a tangle of curved and broken forms, casting dark shadows across the light seabed. Beyond it, open water and a simple horizon give this black and white coastal photograph a quieter background.

I like the structure of the roots most of all. Some descend almost vertically, while others arch sideways or stretch across the foreground. Their surfaces alternate between smooth worn areas and rougher grain, giving the stump a sculptural character. The shallow water remains clear enough for small patterns of light to appear underneath. Those finer marks contrast with the more definite shadows, which help separate the wood’s many forms. A second broken piece to the left adds another pale shape without competing with the main stump.

I photographed the scene in 2012, drawn to the way the driftwood occupied both shore and sea. It is fixed and substantial, yet surrounded by water that keeps changing its appearance. Monochrome makes that relationship clear through texture and tone: light wood, dark recesses and softly patterned shallows. For someone who enjoys coastal photography or natural forms with an almost architectural presence, this image offers a close view with room to look beyond it. I find the simplest part—the open horizon above the tangled roots—just as important as the detail in the foreground.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
