Two Stone Faces Converge Against a Dark Blue-Grey Sky

Standing beneath the Washington Monument, I looked up along the sharp corner that divides its two faces. This photograph turns that view into a tall arrangement of stone and sky in Washington, DC. The lighter surface at the left carries a pale warmth, while the other face falls into deeper shadow against the subdued blue-grey background.

I moved the frame close enough for the monument to fill most of the upright picture. Its sides spread toward the lower corners, then narrow as they rise. That perspective changes how I read the structure: the familiar outline is still there, but the central edge becomes a strong line leading toward the top. The blocks remain visible across both faces, making a fine texture beneath the larger shape.

The sky has enough variation to keep the background from becoming flat. Softer streaks sit around the darker outline, contrasting with the regular courses of stone. I wanted the light to separate the two surfaces clearly, while leaving detail in the shaded face. That balance keeps the monument substantial even in such a close view. For me, the photograph holds the physical experience of looking upward from its base. There are no surrounding buildings or distant skyline to reduce its scale; the frame stays with the stone, the converging lines and the sky immediately around them.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
