Berlin Reichstag Columns Black and White Architectural Photography

Illuminated Steps Beneath the Dem Deutschen Volke Inscription

The columns rise steeply from a broad flight of steps, their capitals and carved stonework set against the darkness. I photographed this close view of Berlin’s Reichstag in black and white in 2013, looking upwards so that the entrance feels tall and substantial. The inscription “Dem Deutschen Volke” runs above the columns, giving the facade a recognisable focal point without taking attention from its structure.

Light changes the character of the stone across the frame. The lower bases and steps are more clearly illuminated, while parts of the upper carving fall into shadow. Behind the columns, bright windows create slender vertical panels that echo the shafts in front of them. I liked how those layers let the eye move between the heavy exterior and the lighter spaces beyond.

The angled viewpoint keeps the building from reading as a flat, symmetrical elevation. Repeated columns progress through the image, and the upper edge of the facade cuts diagonally across the sky. Along the bottom, the many shallow steps form a contrasting set of horizontal lines. Together, these directions give the photograph its sense of scale and depth. It is a detailed architectural study rather than a view of the entire building, concentrating on the entrance and the light around it. For someone drawn to Berlin landmarks or monochrome architecture, the print offers a strong stone presence with quieter details to discover in the shadows.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
