Bright Vertical Bands Combine Curves Blocks and Gold Accents
Bright bands of painted woodwork fill this detail photograph I made in Tibet in 2010. Red, blue, yellow, green and white sit beside gold coloured ornament, with raised blocks and curved motifs giving the surface depth. I was drawn to the precision of the repeating forms and the way each narrow band carries a different pattern within the same close view.
The colours make the first impression, but the shapes keep my attention. Small stepped forms project from the surface, while flatter curves and fine outlines create a more delicate rhythm nearby. I like how the design moves between those two kinds of detail. The red areas give the image warmth, and the cooler blue and green accents provide small pauses within it.
Looking closely, the woodwork becomes an arrangement of light and shadow as well as pigment. Raised pieces cast dark edges below them, making their structure clear against the painted background. White elements pick out smaller curves, while gold coloured lines frame some of the more elaborate motifs. The photograph holds those details at a scale where their relationships are easy to explore.
This colourful architectural detail can bring a lively pattern to a room. It suits an interest in Tibetan travel, decorated surfaces or the meeting of geometry and curved ornament. The horizontal frame contains a series of upright bands, giving the image a clear rhythm even with so much detail. For me, the photograph preserves the pleasure of looking closely at a richly worked surface and finding another pattern each time I return to it.
