Darling Harbour Ferris Wheel Against Clouds Black and White Photography

Looking Up Through the Wheel’s Spokes Into a Dark Sky

Viewed from below, the Darling Harbour Ferris wheel rises diagonally across a clouded sky. Rounded gondolas repeat along the outer edge, while the spokes cross in a fine network of bright lines. I photographed this Sydney amusement ride as a study of geometry, using black and white to bring its structure forward.

The close angle changes the familiar shape of a Ferris wheel. Instead of seeing a complete circle from a distance, the eye follows one sweeping section from the lower corner toward the nearest gondolas. Their curved undersides feel substantial against the thinner metal framework. The wheel’s many braces give the view detail without taking away its clear overall movement.

I like how the sky works with the structure. The clouds are soft and uneven, with darker areas behind the brighter spokes. They provide contrast while leaving room around the gondolas at the top of the frame. There is a pleasing tension between the wheel’s precise repeating parts and the less predictable tones behind them.

Made in 2016, this photograph keeps the amusement-park subject recognisable while giving it a more graphic character. It would appeal to someone who enjoys Sydney travel photography, fairground imagery or monochrome art built around strong lines. For me, the attraction is the upward view: a familiar ride becomes an arrangement of circles, diagonals and suspended shapes against the changing sky.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
