Hanging Moss Crosses the Lines of Swamp Trees
The Spanish moss makes a second set of lines among these East Texas cypress trees. Long strands hang from the branches, crossing the upright trunks and spreading through the gaps between them. I photographed this close view of the swamp forest with only a narrow strip of water along the bottom, giving the trees and their overlapping textures most of the frame.
Several flared trunks establish a strong base near the water. Above them, thinner branches reach sideways and moss falls in soft, uneven curtains. I like the contrast between the solid bark and those finer hanging forms. The darker forest behind gives the pale strands something to stand against, while the lighter trunks help separate one layer of the woods from another.
Converting the photograph to black and white emphasizes that structure. Small changes in tone distinguish bark, moss and shadow, and the image begins to read almost as a drawing made from vertical and horizontal marks. There is still depth in the scene, especially through the narrow openings between the closer trees.
For me, this photograph is about the richness of a forest seen at close range. A single branch leads into another, and the moss connects shapes that might otherwise seem separate. As a nature print, it brings the distinctive character of a Texas swamp to a room through detail and pattern, with restrained monochrome tones and a dense, layered composition.
