Flared Tree Bases Repeat Across Water Beneath Hanging Moss
Cypress trunks rise from the water in this Texas swamp photograph, their flared bases reflected beneath a curtain of hanging moss. I made the image in black and white, bringing the bark, fine branches, and water into a shared range of tones. The vertical frame follows the nearest tree upward while leaving enough space to see several more receding behind it.
The large foreground trunk carries the strongest texture. Its broad base narrows as it rises, with ridges and uneven surfaces catching pale light. Nearby trees repeat that shape at smaller scales, creating depth across the water. I like how the bases remain distinct even where the branches and moss become a dense pattern above them.
The hanging strands soften the view without hiding its structure. They descend between limbs, overlap darker trunks, and leave small openings into the trees beyond. Below, the reflections lengthen the vertical forms and break into gentle ripples. The water offers a quieter surface beside the detailed bark, allowing the eye to move between intricate texture and simpler bands of tone.
This photograph is about the relationships within a close section of swamp rather than a broad panorama. The trees seem to occupy separate spaces, yet their branches, moss, and reflections connect them. Someone drawn to monochrome woodland scenes may enjoy following those overlapping layers. For me, the nearest trunk provides a starting point; from there, the repeated bases and their reflected lines lead gradually into the more distant trees, with the water keeping the whole view connected.
