Cuban Architecture with a Revolutionary Past

I’ve always had a fascination with symmetry—not just the textbook kind you learn in school, but the kind that stops you in your tracks because it feels right. That’s exactly what happened when I stood across from this section of the Revolution Museum in Havana. The balance, the rhythm, the quiet intensity of that facade—it wasn’t just architectural, it was emotional.

This building, once the Presidential Palace, holds layers of Cuban history, but from this angle it’s stripped of politics and reduced to pure geometry. Lines intersect with curves, shutters repeat like a well-rehearsed chorus, and wrought iron railings lend their intricate handwriting to the whole affair. It’s formal, yes—but never stiff. There’s just enough weathering to suggest that time has been here, too.

I chose to render it in black and white to elevate that tonal interplay—bright plaster against shadowed interiors, windowpanes like little framed voids, and the contrast of classical columns with sharp, almost Deco-style detailing above. No distractions from colour—just form and pattern, light and structure. There’s a play between rigidity and openness, too—the open doors offering a glimpse of life behind the stone, breaking the perfection just enough to make it human.

To me, this isn’t just a photo of a building. It’s a kind of architectural portrait. These walls have witnessed revolutions, receptions, whispered deals, and everyday bureaucracy. And now, frozen in this image, they invite viewers to slow down and consider the role of design in power. It’s the kind of photograph that doesn’t shout—it lingers.

This print speaks to collectors who love cities, stories, and structure. It anchors a room without overpowering it. I’d place it alongside minimalist furnishings, or let it contrast boldly against something messy and modern. It’s quiet, but don’t confuse that for tame.

If architectural form fascinates you the way it does me, take a walk through my Architectural Photography Collection. Or, if you’re curious about the layered textures of Cuba—beyond the clichés and into the spaces where history still hums—explore the Cuba Photography Collection.
