Arched Openings And Shutters Around A Dark Centre
The balance of this courtyard facade at Havana’s Revolution Museum stopped me when I stood opposite it. Repeated openings, pale wall sections and dark railings formed the kind of symmetry I find especially satisfying to photograph. I made this image in 2017, choosing black and white to keep the pattern of light and structure at the centre of the view.
Three groups of openings run across the facade, with a broader section in the middle. Arched forms appear at different heights, alternating with rectangular windows and horizontal ledges. Small narrow openings repeat above the shutters, while the wall joints provide a finer grid behind the larger shapes. The photograph keeps those patterns closely framed, with no sky or surrounding street to interrupt them.
The shutters add another scale of detail. Their fine slats sit within pale frames, and delicate metal railings cross the lower edges of the openings. I like the contrast between that intricate work and the broad, relatively plain wall surfaces. Dark recesses give the facade depth without breaking its overall order.
At the lower centre, an open doorway creates the strongest interruption. Its dark interior differs from the closed shutters on either side, making the building feel less uniform while preserving the composition’s balance. For me, this is an architectural portrait built from small variations within repetition. The monochrome treatment gives it a clear, formal presence, suited to someone drawn to Cuban architecture or to photographs in which windows, curves and measured spacing become the main subject.
