A Shared Smile Seen Through Glass and Street Reflections
This photograph still makes me smile. I was walking through Oslo with my camera under my jacket when I passed a cafe window and noticed two women laughing inside. I paused and framed the view through the glass. Their expressions are what hold the image together, even with the street reflections layered across the scene.
Both women sit at the window counter, with cups and a small plant nearby. One has a striped sleeve and dark scarf; the other rests her head against her hand. I love the directness of their smiles. The close arrangement gives the moment a clear human focus, while the counter, stools and objects around them keep it connected to an everyday cafe setting. Reflected windows and architectural lines from the street add another view across the glass without entirely hiding the people behind it.
The rough wall on the right provides a different surface beside the window. Its pale marks and worn texture contrast with the finer reflections and clearer faces. Black and white brings those layers into a shared range of tones, allowing the photograph to remain detailed without pulling attention away from the women. I keep returning to this image for that brief, visible warmth. The glass separates the street from the cafe, but the smiles remain easy to recognise across it, making the people the most immediate part of the view.
