Orange Rust and Flaking Red Paint Surround the Emblem
Orange rust and remnants of red paint give this Dodge truck grille an unexpectedly vivid surface. The raised DODGE lettering sits near the centre, surrounded by peeling layers and the grille’s dark horizontal openings. I photographed the detail closely, letting the weathered front become the entire subject rather than showing the truck as a whole.
What interests me is the meeting of a deliberate design and an irregular surface. The grille has a clear order: repeated slots, a central division, and an emblem extending across it. Over that structure, the paint has broken into smaller shapes. Some pieces curl away from the metal; others remain as bright red patches among the orange and yellow tones. Around the lettering, a paler greenish surface gives the centre a different colour and texture. The deep openings behind the grille add enough darkness to keep those brighter surfaces distinct.
I made this photograph in 2010, drawn to how much visual detail could be found in one part of an old vehicle. From a distance, the composition reads as a bold arrangement of warm colour and repeated lines. Closer up, the worn edges and small flakes become the main interest. This print offers a classic truck subject with an almost abstract quality, making it a good fit for a garage, workshop, or room that welcomes industrial texture. The Dodge name remains recognisable, while the surface around it gives the photograph its particular character.
