Crossing Chrome Spokes Around a Bold Three Armed Centre
Chrome spokes cross in a dense pattern around the Thunderbird badge, with a broad whitewall curving along the lower edge. The close view makes the wheel nearly fill the vertical frame. I photographed this classic car detail in 2014, interested in how a functional part could also offer such a rich arrangement of reflections and lines.
The centre has a much simpler shape than the spokes around it. Three broad arms extend from the circular badge, giving the eye a place to settle within the busy metalwork. I like that contrast between the large, smooth forms and the many thin spokes crossing behind them. The wheel is recognizable immediately, but its structure becomes more intricate the longer it is studied.
Black and white brings out the bright highlights and deep reflected shadows in the chrome. Some spokes remain clear, while others merge into the surrounding reflections. The pale tyre band provides a quieter curve outside the metal, helping to separate the wheel from the darker edge of the photograph. That change in texture is an important part of the composition.
Photographing details like this lets me share what interests me about classic cars without needing a complete exterior view. This image would suit a garage office, automotive collection or a room with an interest in polished industrial design. Its vertical format gives the wheel a strong presence, with the Thunderbird name and individual reflections offering smaller details at close range.
