Chrome and Streetlight Along a Weathered Havana Facade

The taxi gives this Havana night photograph a solid centre: rounded hood, bright chrome bumper, and a small roof sign catching the available light. Around it, doorways and windows illuminate sections of the old street, while the upper balconies disappear into darkness. I photographed the scene on location in Cuba, keeping the car within the architecture and activity around it.

I like the way the taxi’s curved shape sits against the upright lines behind it. Tall entrances, shuttered openings, and worn columns create a rhythm along the pavement. The front of the car faces into the wider dark space at the left, giving its polished surfaces room to stand out. Its grille and headlights provide some of the sharpest highlights in the image.

Farther along the street, a figure becomes a softer presence beside the more clearly defined car. Light on the pavement carries the eye toward that movement, then back to the taxi. Small reflections connect the vehicle to the street rather than separating it as a standalone automobile portrait.

Black and white brings those relationships forward. The brightest areas describe chrome, glass, and open doorways; deeper greys keep the walls and balconies visible without overpowering the subject. I wanted to preserve both the classic car’s character and the particular atmosphere of Havana after dark. The photograph holds a brief balance between a firmly defined taxi and a city scene that continues around it, full of uneven light, weathered surfaces, and passing movement.
