Polished Steering Wheel Spokes Beside Vintage Dashboard Gauges
A polished steering wheel fills the right side of this classic Ford convertible interior photograph. Beside it, pale gauge faces sit within a reflective dashboard panel, their markings and needles offering smaller details within the close view. I framed the interior at an angle, letting the wheel’s broad curve cross the more horizontal lines of the dashboard.
In black and white, the reflections become part of the design. Bright edges outline the perforated spokes and circular centre of the wheel. The curved dashboard above catches darker shapes, while the recess below the gauges falls into shadow. That range of tones keeps the metallic surfaces distinct from the darker interior around them.
I made this photograph in 2013, drawn to the combination of mechanical detail and sculptural form. The instruments have a clear visual order, but the angled viewpoint gives the composition movement. The wheel continues beyond the right edge, making its size and shape feel more immediate than they would in a wider view of the whole car.
There is plenty to study without a driver or a road in the frame. The small controls, gauge typography, spokes, and dashboard curves carry the story of the interior on their own. This print is a focused automotive study for someone who appreciates classic car design. It works naturally in a study, office, or garage space, where the monochrome contrast can give those familiar mechanical details a strong presence on the wall.
