Haarlem St Bavo Church at Night Black and White Photography
Lit Gothic Windows Rise Above an Open Market Square
Late in the evening, I stood in Haarlem’s Grote Markt watching the light on St Bavo Church. The square was quiet, and the illuminated windows and stonework stood clearly against the dark sky. I made this black and white photograph with enough open ground in front to show how the church and its neighbouring buildings sit together.
The tower draws the eye upward, but the lower part of the church has just as much to follow. Tall windows repeat along the side, a large arched opening fills the near gable, and small structures gather at the base. The light picks out those different heights rather than giving the entire facade the same brightness.
To the right, the museum building has a broader, more horizontal shape. Its row of rounded windows provides another rhythm beside the church’s pointed forms. Between them, narrower facades bring a finer scale of detail into the frame. I wanted to keep that group of buildings intact because the church feels more substantial when it is seen in its setting.
The paving gives the photograph a quieter foreground. A patterned section crosses the lower part of the square, with small reflections gathering near the lamps. I found myself noticing more as I stayed there: the change between lit and unlit windows, the outlines against the sky, and the space around the buildings. The photograph keeps that slower view of Haarlem after dark.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
