Charlie Chaplin and a Boy on a Cuban Wall | Monochrome Photograph
Two Painted Faces Along the Edge of a Quiet Grey Wall
Charlie Chaplin’s painted face appears above a smaller boy at the right edge of this Cuban wall photograph. His dark bowler hat and jacket stand clearly against a broad grey surface, while the boy’s cap and face enter near the bottom. I encountered the mural during a neighbourhood walk in 2017 and made this close black and white view.
The framing gives the wall an active role. Much of the left side remains open, with fine scratches and variations in the plaster providing a quiet texture. The figures are held tightly against the right, creating a strong difference between the empty-looking surface and the concentrated painted detail. Chaplin’s eyes, small moustache and pale face become easy to locate within that arrangement.
I find the two faces interesting together because they occupy different scales and positions. The larger figure looks outward from above, while the smaller face sits closer to the lower edge. Dark painted areas connect them, yet the pale facial details remain separate points of attention. Monochrome brings the mural and the wall into one range of tones without flattening those differences.
Finding familiar screen imagery in an ordinary street setting was what made me pause. The photograph keeps that encounter close, with the painted characters sharing space with the wall’s own worn marks. For someone drawn to cinema, Cuban street details or graphic urban photography, this vertical image offers a recognisable subject within a restrained composition. My eye moves between the two faces, then rests in the quieter plaster beside them.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
