Stone Walls And Blue Shutters Above Rippling Water

The moat narrows between stone walls in this view of Castillo de la Real Fuerza. A tall corner of the fort fills the right side, while balconies and blue shutters appear on the neighbouring facade to the left. I photographed the scene while exploring Havana in 2017. The arrangement brings a strong sense of depth to a compact view, with water guiding the eye toward the tower above.

I was struck by the fort’s imposing presence, but it is the smaller relationships that hold my attention in this photograph. The pale stone catches direct light, darker patches reveal the uneven wall surface, and a shadow falls around the recessed opening near the water. Above those details, the tower has a lighter outline against the clear blue sky.

The water introduces a softer texture below the masonry. Small ripples break up the reflected light, giving the lower portion a pattern that differs from the squared blocks above. On the left, the blue-painted shutters and railings add a distinct colour accent. I enjoy how those features connect the fort with the adjacent buildings rather than leaving it isolated in the frame.

This is an architectural image I would choose for someone interested in Havana, Cuban travel photography or the textures of older stone buildings. Its square composition holds the moat, walls and tower together, with room for both broad shapes and close detail. For me, the appeal lies in looking along the water and then upward, discovering how light and colour give each part of the scene its own character.
