Abandoned Saskatchewan Barn With Open Loft Black and White Photography

An Exposed Loft Above Weathered Boards and Prairie Grass

I photographed this abandoned barn while spending time among the quiet buildings of a Saskatchewan farm. Its upper front has opened enough to reveal the roof’s inner structure, with two small diamond-shaped windows on either side. In black and white, that dark loft becomes a strong focal point above the pale grass and weathered wooden walls.

The roof slopes down in a broad curve toward the left, while a lower extension reaches outward on the right. Closely spaced boards run across the front and side, interrupted by doors and small openings. A narrow ladder leans toward an upper doorway. Beyond the barn, the prairie horizon stays low beneath layers of cloud. Fence posts and short rails cross the foreground, giving a nearer rhythm to the loose grass that fills the yard.

What held my attention was how clearly the barn’s overall shape remained, despite the missing section near its peak. I kept enough space around it to show the grass, fence, and open land together rather than isolating the damaged area. The darker openings bring depth to the frontage, while the lighter boards carry smaller variations across its surface. I made the photograph in 2025, and it preserves the view I encountered at that farm: a substantial building standing within a much wider landscape. For me, its character lies in the combination of a recognizable agricultural form and the irregular details left by weather and time.
