Two Weathered Buildings Beneath an Open Prairie Sky
A weathered farmhouse stands in long grass beneath a wide Saskatchewan sky, with a smaller outbuilding set back near the trees. I found this place while driving across the province, miles from the nearest town. In black and white, the pale marks on the wooden siding become prominent, while the dark windows and steep roof give the house a strong shape against the sweeping clouds.
I was drawn to the relationship between the two buildings and the space around them. The farmhouse sits forward at the right, its gabled front catching more light than the side wall. A brick chimney breaks the roofline, and an open upper window leaves a dark rectangle beneath the peak. The smaller structure at the left repeats the weathered boards on a quieter scale. Behind it, a line of trees adds another texture, while the low horizon leaves room for the cloud patterns to stretch across the frame.
Photographing the scene in monochrome let me concentrate on those differences in surface and light. The fine grass softens the base of the buildings, and the worn siding holds detail without needing colour to separate it from the landscape. I wanted the photograph to keep the openness that had made me stop during the drive. It offers a quiet focal point for a room with an interest in rural architecture, Canadian prairie scenery or abandoned places. For me, it remains a memory of this particular roadside discovery, where two small structures held their place within an expansive landscape.
