Vintage Truck in Saskatchewan Grass Black and White Photography
A Weathered Cab Above the Windblown Prairie Grass
I came across this old truck while slowing down on a rural road in Saskatchewan. From a distance, the cab still had a clear outline, but as I walked into the field, the grass began to take over the view. It crossed the front of the vehicle and hid much of its lower body. I stood there for a while, watching the wind move through the stems and choosing a position where the rounded roof would remain distinct against the sky.
The divided windshield and open side window give the cab a strong framework within all that loose growth. Behind it, the upright wooden side of the truck bed adds another surface, with a different grain from the weathered metal. I kept a generous amount of sky above the vehicle, allowing the thin clouds to soften the upper part of the photograph. Below, the grasses gather into a much denser pattern. Their pale tips catch the light, while darker strands make the front of the cab appear to recede into the field.
Working in black and white helped me concentrate on those overlapping textures. The photograph moves between the firm shape of the truck and the restless lines surrounding it. I remember the contrast between standing still with my camera and the constant motion in the grass. That is what I wanted to carry into this image: a recognizable old vehicle held within a landscape that was moving around it.
