Abandoned Church Near Leross Saskatchewan Black and White Photography
Boarded Windows and a Steeple Beneath Sweeping Clouds
I slowed down near Leross, Saskatchewan, and stopped to photograph this small abandoned church. The steeple was immediately recognizable, but the boarded openings and broad sky gave the view more to work with. I stayed longer than expected, watching the streaks of cloud move above the roof. From where I stood, the church and the tall trees beside it made two distinct shapes within the same patch of land.
The building has a simple outline: a long pitched roof, a small entrance porch and a narrow tower rising to a cross. Along the side, the block-patterned wall is interrupted by pale boards covering the windows. Darker boards close the front doorway, and the small steps and handrail remain visible below. Two taller trees fill the left side, with smaller evergreens around the entrance. Other buildings and utility lines appear farther back, keeping the church within its small-town surroundings.
I used black and white to concentrate on the differences between those surfaces and the sky. The wall has a regular pattern, while the clouds sweep across in much broader, softer bands. Light catches the steeple and some of the boarded windows, allowing their edges to stand apart. I wanted the photograph to keep the full setting rather than make the church seem isolated from everything around it. It brings together the worn entrance, the neighbouring trees and the changing prairie sky as I saw them during that roadside stop.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
