A Weathered Two Storey Farmhouse Beneath Heavy Prairie Clouds
Heavy clouds gave this Saskatchewan farmhouse a different presence within the prairie landscape. I stopped while travelling through the countryside in 2021, drawn to the building’s shape against the layered sky. Standing outside the vehicle, I could hear the wind across the grass. I wanted the photograph to include enough of the surrounding land and weather to show why this view had caught my attention.
The two storey house has several roof peaks, dark window openings, and weathered surfaces that change from shingles above to longer boards below. Fallen timber lies near the entrance, creating a low, irregular shape at the base. A smaller outbuilding stands to the left, while open rolling fields extend beyond the house to the right. I kept those surroundings visible because they give the main structure a place within the wider scene. Above it all, broad darker clouds alternate with brighter patches near the horizon.
Black and white makes the sky and wood equally important. The cloud tones create a broad pattern across the upper frame, while the siding and windows provide finer detail below. My eye moves between the roofline and that changing sky, then returns to the grass and fallen boards in front. This photograph reflects what I enjoy about exploring rural places with a camera: the same building can feel very different according to the landscape and light around it. As prairie wall art, it offers a strong architectural subject with the open space and textured weather of Saskatchewan, suited to a study or a room with neutral tones.
