Weathered Prairie Homestead Beneath Rolling Storm Clouds

I came across this abandoned farmhouse in the open prairie of Saskatchewan, standing alone in a stretch of land that feels almost endless. There’s nothing decorative about it. No fences to frame it, no trees to soften it. Just a structure left to face the weather year after year, slowly giving itself back to the land.

What drew me in immediately was the contrast between the house and the sky. The building itself is worn but still holding its shape, every board and shingle telling a story of time and exposure. The siding has started to peel and warp, the windows sit empty, and the front entrance has begun to collapse into itself. Yet it’s still standing, almost stubbornly, as if it refuses to fully disappear.

Above it, the clouds roll in heavy layers. Not dramatic in an exaggerated way, but real—dense, textured, and constantly shifting. The sky carries weight here, and it changes how the house feels. Without it, this would just be an abandoned building. With it, the entire scene becomes something quieter, more reflective, almost suspended in time.

I photographed this on location while travelling through rural Saskatchewan, stopping when I saw the structure rising out of the landscape with nothing around it. There’s a kind of stillness out there that doesn’t exist in more populated places. You feel it immediately when you step out of the vehicle. No noise, no movement—just wind and space.

This piece works well in spaces where you want something grounded and understated. It’s not loud, but it carries presence. The textures hold up at larger sizes, especially in black and white, where the detail in the wood, grass, and sky becomes the focus rather than colour.

Each print is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-quality paper, then personally signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It’s created to last, both in material and in the feeling it carries.

If you’re drawn to scenes that reflect real places and real moments, you can explore more from this series in my abandoned places wall art collection.
