Peach and Lavender Sky Above a Level Blue Horizon
From Toronto’s shoreline on a winter evening, I watched dusk settle over Lake Ontario. The view was almost entirely water and sky, with peach tones fading through lavender toward a muted blue horizon. This colour photograph keeps that simplicity intact: a level dividing line, fine ripples below it and a broad gradient of light above.
There was no large wave or landmark that made me lift the camera. It was the gradual change in colour that held my attention. The warmer tones sit high in the sky, while a darker band forms nearer the horizon. Between them, the transitions are soft enough that I find myself looking for where one colour becomes another.
The water provides a different kind of detail. Small ripples repeat across the lower part of the frame, catching warmer reflections among the cooler blue-grey tones. That texture keeps the lake from becoming a flat band, while leaving the sky as the more open space. I wanted enough water in the composition to hold that subtle movement.
Standing at the shore, I felt removed from the city behind me. The photograph preserves that direction of attention, looking outward across the lake rather than back toward Toronto. Its few elements give each tone and line more presence. For me, the scene was worth photographing precisely because it asked for a slower look: open water, winter dusk and colour changing quietly across the sky.
