Weathered Barn Walls Behind Snow Laden Winter Branches
Fresh snow had changed the Ontario countryside when I made this photograph in 2018. The barn’s dark wooden boards stood out against a fine covering of white on the surrounding branches and grasses. I was drawn to that contrast: a simple rural building almost enclosed by winter growth, with its doorway providing a small opening into the darker space beyond. Moving closer brought the surface of the wood and the intricate branches into the same frame.
The view gives the barn a strong presence without clearing away its surroundings. Snow traces the smaller twigs, settles along the foreground plants, and turns a tangle of vegetation into a delicate pattern. Above it, the diagonal lines of the metal roof meet the vertical boards below. I like how those straight structural lines hold their shape against the loose curves of the trees. The open doorway interrupts the wall just enough to draw my eye inward before the branches bring it back across the photograph.
Black and white lets those differences in texture carry the scene. The barn is defined by grain, seams, and uneven tones; the snow is softer, but far from featureless. For me, this is the appeal of photographing familiar country buildings in winter. A snowfall can change the whole balance of a place without changing its basic shape. As wall art, the photograph brings that close, textured view of rural Ontario into a room, offering both the solid form of the barn and the finer details that reward another look.
