Ontario Barn in Winter Snow Black and White Photography
Dark Timber and a Snowy Roof Beside Ontario Woodland
I found this barn during a slow drive through rural Ontario on a cold morning. Fresh snow had settled across the ground and along the roof, leaving the dark boards especially clear against their surroundings. I stopped because the scene felt still and the structure had enough texture to hold a simple composition. Placing the barn to one side allowed the snow-covered field and trees to remain part of the photograph rather than becoming a narrow border around it.
The barn has tall vertical boards above a low stone foundation, with small dark openings near ground level. Snow covers much of the roof, interrupted by a strip of exposed roofing near the ridge. In front, stems rise through the white field, adding fine marks that lead toward the building. Bare trees and snow-laden evergreens stand behind it. Their branches create a detailed background, while the sky above stays pale and open, giving the heavier textures below some room.
Black and white keeps the photograph centred on those differences in surface and tone. The barn’s weathered timber is darker and coarser than the surrounding snow, and its straight roofline contrasts with the more delicate shapes of the trees. I made the image in Ontario in 2018, responding to a scene encountered while driving rather than seeking out a particular property. I like the balance between the substantial building and its quiet winter setting: plenty of detail in the wood, with enough open snow to let the composition settle.
