Rain Beads on Blue Paint Beside a Colourful Porch
Rain had just passed through Niagara on the Lake when I found this blue Plymouth parked beside a brightly painted porch. I was walking through town, and the combination of wet paint, chrome and decorative woodwork made me stop. Standing just off the driveway, I worked quickly while the soft light held across the car. The water droplets were still distinct on the hood and windshield, giving a familiar vintage shape a much finer texture.
I framed the front of the Plymouth closely, letting its rounded hood and broad fender fill the lower part of the image. The circular headlamps and chrome grille make a series of bright edges against the blue. A whitewall tyre adds another clean curve at the right. Behind the car, pale horizontal siding provides a quieter background, while yellow porch rails, green trim and reddish wood introduce warmer notes at the left. Flowers gather between the porch and the bumper, bringing smaller patches of colour into the scene.
Keeping this photograph in colour was important to the balance I had seen. The blue carries most of the frame, but it becomes richer beside those yellow and green accents. The damp pavement and small puddle beneath the bumper continue the reflections lower down. I remember wanting to hold the view while everything still had that sheen after rain. The photograph brings the car and its setting together, with the porch details giving the close automotive study a particular sense of place.
