Haliburton Cracked Mud and Swamp Channels Black and White Photography
Dark Water Lines Across a Drying Swamp Floor
A shallow channel can look like a river when the rest of the world is left outside the frame. I made this black and white photograph in a swamp near my studio in Haliburton, Ontario, during a dry stretch that exposed the marsh floor. Dark water traces a winding route through pale mud, while cracks and scattered reeds create a second network of finer lines.
I found the scene while walking through wetlands I have explored for years. Rather than looking toward a distant view, I stopped to study the ground. The surface was full of small variations: broad patches of drying earth, narrow splits, and fragments of vegetation lying at different angles. I photographed it from above, keeping the frame close enough that the channel could become the main movement through the composition. Its bends interrupt the flatter texture around it, giving my eye a path to follow without losing the quieter details.
Working in monochrome let me concentrate on those relationships. The darker water and the edges of the broken mud stand apart from the grey surface, while the reeds add thin, irregular marks. I enjoy how the photograph moves between a recognizable piece of wetland and something that resembles a map. Nothing in the scene needed to be arranged; the interest was already there in the exposed ground. For someone drawn to abstract nature photography or woodland textures, this is a close look at a small Haliburton landscape that usually sits beneath our attention.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
