A Snowy Opening Between Evergreens and Slender Bare Trees
I know the woods around my Haliburton studio well, but fresh snow changes how I see them. I photographed this scene nearby after snowfall, when the branches were still carrying a heavy white covering and the forest felt particularly still. A narrow opening through the trees gave me a way into the composition. I kept it low in the square frame, letting the evergreens and slender bare trunks rise around it beneath a textured sky.
The two sides of the image offer different patterns. Dark evergreen needles on the left and through the centre hold bright clumps of snow, while the right side is crossed by many pale trunks and fine branches. The snow on the ground creates a simpler area between them. I liked how that opening allows the eye to move into a dense woodland without becoming lost immediately in its detail. Above the trees, the cloud cover adds soft changes in tone, leaving space around the tallest branches.
Black and white helps separate the snow from the dark foliage while retaining the smaller lines of the bare trees. I wanted the photograph to keep the stillness I experienced outside, along with the texture that makes a snowy forest worth looking at closely. As winter wall art, it offers a familiar Ontario woodland scene for a cottage, bedroom, or reading space. The quiet opening provides the first point of attention, and the layered branches reveal more detail as the eye moves from the foreground toward the trees beyond.
