Pointed Spires and Pale Siding Beneath Atlantic Clouds

St John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg rises into a textured sky, its pale siding outlined by dark Gothic trim. I photographed the Nova Scotia landmark in black and white, keeping the central tower, pointed windows, and smaller spires within a vertical frame. The lawn provides a simple foreground, while the buildings at the edges keep the church connected to the town around it.

During my travels through Nova Scotia, I was drawn to Lunenburg’s streets and the architectural details that appear as I walk through them. Approaching the church, I wanted an angle that showed more than a flat front elevation. I remember stepping back several times before finding this view, where the side walls and smaller roof peaks give the tower a wider base. The light separates the bright siding from the dark trim, and the clouds leave enough variation behind the spires to emphasize their fine outlines.

What holds my attention is the repetition of pointed shapes at different scales. The large window above the entrance echoes the smaller windows and doorways, while the narrow spires carry that upward movement beyond the main roofline. Monochrome lets those relationships stand out clearly without losing the texture of the wooden exterior. For someone drawn to Atlantic Canadian architecture or church photography, this image offers a detailed view with a strong sense of place. I like the balance between the building’s intricate upper silhouette and the ordinary lawn, pavement, and neighbouring houses below; both belong to the experience of seeing it in Lunenburg.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
