Two Weathered Farm Buildings Beyond a Fence in Tall Grass
Two weathered farm buildings stand apart in a wide field beneath the mountains in this British Columbia photograph. I made the image in black and white, keeping the grassy foreground and cloud-filled sky around them. Their small forms give the open landscape a focal point while leaving its larger scale intact.
The building at the left has a long, low roof; the one at the right is taller, with a small dark opening beneath its gable. A tree grows close beside it. Fence posts cross the foreground at irregular intervals, with a short rail forming a darker line among the pale grass. Beyond the buildings, the mountains rise in broad layers. Their softer tones separate them from the sharper edges of the wood, while the clouds introduce smaller changes of light above the ridge.
I stood in the field and worked with the natural light as the scene unfolded. What interested me was the space between the buildings as much as either structure alone. That gap allows the distant mountain to remain visible and keeps the composition from gathering all its weight in one place. I included the fence because it gives a nearer scale to the grass before the eye travels farther across the land. Photographed in 2021, this view holds a particular arrangement of farm structures, open field, and western Canadian mountains. Monochrome lets their different textures remain clear within a shared, quiet range of tones.
