Coastal Boat and Fog British Columbia Black and White Photography
A Dark Hull Below Forested Mountains and Low Cloud
During my travels through coastal British Columbia, I watched this vessel move across the water beneath a steep forested shoreline. Low cloud drifted along the upper trees, alternately revealing and softening the mountain edge. I waited with the scene, looking for a position where the boat would remain distinct against the dense forest. Its closer, clearly defined form gave the larger landscape a point of reference without reducing the scale of the mountains behind it.
The dark hull is traced by a pale line and a series of round portholes. Above it, the wheelhouse windows, railings, and slender rigging form a more intricate shape. A small boat sits on the upper deck. In the water below, ripples interrupt the vessel’s reflection, while the far shore runs nearly straight across the frame. The trees rise in dense bands up the slopes, broken by exposed rock and patches of lighter foliage. Near the top, cloud removes much of the ridge outline.
Black and white allows the boat, forest, and mist to remain different through tone and texture. The small bright circles on the hull are especially clear against its dark surface, and the pale cloud provides a softer ending to the detailed slopes. I made this photograph in 2011 while moving through British Columbia’s coastal waterways. What interested me was the relationship between a single vessel and the space surrounding it: a small, visible movement on the water beneath a much larger landscape of trees and low cloud.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
