A Weathered Barn Behind a Broken Rail Fence
I found this barn while travelling through the interior of British Columbia, just outside Hedley. It was an unplanned stop, prompted by the building and the thick cloud cover above it. I took time to work with the view from beyond the fence, where the rough rails would become a foreground line leading toward the barn. The sky gave the scene a strong upper layer, with darker clouds gathering above the weathered roof.
The barn sits slightly to the right of centre, allowing the hills and scattered trees to remain visible at the left. Its broad roof has gaps and uneven rows of shingles, and the wooden walls carry a darker horizontal grain. Small openings punctuate the front, with a larger doorway low down and another door near the corner. In front of it, the fence changes height as broken and tilted rails cross one another. The grasses bring a finer texture beneath those heavier pieces of wood.
Black and white helped me connect the clouds with the different tones across the barn. The lighter field separates its outline from the land, while the worn siding keeps plenty of detail within the shape. I wanted the photograph to hold both the larger setting and the smaller breaks in the structure. Looking back at it, my eye follows the fence first, then moves over the roof toward the clouds. That route through the frame reflects what made me stop: a recognizable rural building beneath a sky that gave the whole scene weight.
