Rounded Ears and Bright Eyes in a Close Portrait
A black bear cub looks toward my camera, its rounded ears and pale muzzle standing out from the dark fur. I made this wildlife portrait in British Columbia and chose black and white to emphasize the fine detail of the coat. The softly blurred background keeps the face clear, with small highlights in the eyes providing the photograph’s strongest points of focus.
I remember standing still and letting the encounter unfold while exploring wildlife areas in the province. The cub paused only briefly before turning away and moving back into the brush. That short interval gave me the frame I wanted: the head turned toward me, both ears visible, and the fur catching enough light to separate the face from the darker body. I kept the composition close, allowing part of the shoulder to remain at the right so the portrait would retain a sense of the animal’s shape.
What interests me is how much variation appears within a coat that first looks almost uniformly dark. The longer hairs across the forehead make a fine radiating pattern, while the muzzle has a softer, lighter texture. Monochrome lets those changes remain visible without drawing attention away from the eyes. For someone who enjoys bear photography or Canadian wildlife portraits, this image offers a detailed view from a brief encounter in the field. I like that the photograph has a direct presence while still holding the small physical details that made me stop and look: the curved ears, the nose, and the light caught along the fur.
