A Bright Yellow Throat Beneath a Green Bullfrog’s Clear Eyes
The bullfrog’s bright yellow throat gives this close pond photograph its immediate point of colour. Above it, a green face and two clear eyes sit at the water’s surface, surrounded by small floating leaves. I made the image in 2013, keeping the view direct so the frog’s face could remain the centre of a richly textured aquatic scene.
There is plenty of detail around that central shape. Water gathers in small ripples beside the body, and droplets sit on the leaves nearest the camera. The frog’s brown-green back recedes towards the upper part of the frame, where the surface becomes softer. In front, the yellow throat forms a broad curve that contrasts with the darker water beneath it.
I enjoy the way the surrounding leaves give the portrait a natural frame. Their rounded shapes echo the frog’s outline, but they vary in colour and position enough to keep the arrangement loose. Small stems and darker gaps between the leaves add finer lines. The photograph offers a close animal portrait and a pond study at the same time.
Natural colour is essential to the image. Green, yellow and brown remain distinct against the deep blue-grey water, while the eyes hold small dark centres within lighter rims. For someone drawn to amphibians, pond wildlife or detailed nature photography, this square print offers a vivid subject at an intimate scale. My attention returns to the face first, then moves outward through the droplets, leaves and small changes in the water’s surface.
