A Frog’s Head Above Water Among Floating Leaves
The bullfrog’s head rises above the pond surface near the right side of this Algonquin Park photograph. Its eyes and textured face are visible between the floating leaves, with a small reflection below. I made the image while moving slowly along the shoreline, watching the water’s edge and allowing the scene to hold my attention.
The frog occupies only a small part of the frame. Most of the view belongs to the water and overlapping leaves, which form a pattern of pale shapes outlined by darker ripples. I like that balance: the animal is clear once noticed, but its surroundings remain important. The open water beside the head gives it some separation from the busier patches of leaves without removing it from the pond.
Black and white brings out the differences between smooth water, leaf surfaces and the frog’s marked skin. Some leaves catch more light than others, and their edges vary from crisp to softer as they move farther from the central subject. My photograph stays low and close to the water, keeping the view intimate while leaving room around the frog. I find myself moving between its head and the repeated shapes across the pond. The reflection adds another small detail to that close look, connecting the animal to the surface beneath it.
