Lichen Draped Tree in British Columbia Rainforest Colour Photography
Pale Hanging Strands Above Green Undergrowth and Forested Slopes
A small tree carries long pale strands of hanging lichen, standing out from the greener vegetation around it. Behind the branches, a forested slope and patches of exposed rock fill the background. I photographed this scene during a trip through the waterways of northern British Columbia, when we travelled into the rainforest to photograph spirit bears with Canadian photographer John Marriott.
The tree gives this wider setting a clear point of focus. Its dark trunk bends slightly as it rises, and the finer branches spread into a loose crown above. Yellow-green strands hang well below several limbs, making a different pattern from the leaves and grasses around them. I like how that pale growth remains distinct without losing its place among the surrounding greens.
My photograph includes the lower vegetation as well as the hillside beyond. Grass and low plants introduce warm brown and reddish notes near the bottom, while dense shrubs sit behind the trunk. Farther back, the taller trees become a finer, more distant texture. Those layers give the scene depth even though no sky is included in the square frame.
This colour nature print would suit someone drawn to British Columbia’s forests and small details within a larger landscape. The hanging strands offer an unusual focal point, while the varied greens connect the tree to its surroundings. It is a view from the same journey in which I was looking for wildlife, with the forest itself becoming the subject here.
