Black Bear Portrait in British Columbia | Monochrome Photograph
A Direct Bear Portrait With Fine Droplets Across Dark Fur
The bear faces the camera squarely, its rounded ears and pale muzzle framed by thick dark fur. I made this close portrait in British Columbia in 2011, using black and white to bring the facial detail and wet coat into focus. Small droplets catch the light across the hair, adding fine highlights around the animal’s broad shape.
The eyes are modest in size but central to the photograph. They sit on either side of the lighter bridge of the muzzle, with the dark nose forming another clear point below. I kept the head and shoulders large in the frame, allowing the coat to fill most of the surrounding space. The background remains soft enough to separate the outline without introducing another subject.
Overcast light helped reveal the fur without hard bands of shadow. The hair lies in many directions around the face, then becomes longer and darker along the body. In monochrome, those changes in texture remain visible as the tones move from small pale highlights to the deeper areas beneath the head.
I remember the shared pause of this encounter, watching closely and staying still as the moment unfolded. That restraint shaped the photograph’s direct composition. The bear’s presence comes through its visible form and gaze, with the coat supplying much of the image’s detail.
For someone drawn to close wildlife portraits, this photograph offers a strong Canadian subject in a quiet palette. The face is clear at first glance, while the finer droplets and strands of fur emerge with a longer look.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
