Eiffel Tower and Starburst Lamps Black and White Night Photography
An Illuminated Landmark Within a Broad Dark Sky
The Eiffel Tower stands at the centre of a large expanse of dark sky, its illuminated ironwork drawing a clear line upward. I made this photograph in Paris in 2008, choosing a straight view that lets the shape of the tower speak for itself. The surrounding space gives it room, with the highest point sitting well below the top of the frame.
Across the lower part of the scene, street lamps form small starbursts on either side of the tower. Their points of light establish a loose horizontal rhythm beneath the taller structure. Dark trees frame the edges, and the foreground remains low and subdued. I like how these smaller lights bring a sense of scale to the image while keeping the tower as its unmistakable centre.
In black and white, the illuminated lattice becomes especially delicate. The broad arch at the base leads into a narrowing sequence of platforms and ironwork, with fine bright lines visible against the night. The contrast gives the photograph a strong presence, yet the generous sky keeps it calm. It holds both the intricate construction and the simple outline of the landmark in a single view.
For someone with a lasting connection to Paris, this photograph offers a familiar sight with a restrained mood. The vertical format and deep tones can create a distinct focal point in a bedroom, hallway or living space. I return to the balance between that solitary bright structure and the darkness around it, which gives the city at night its particular appeal.
