Baxter State Bank, Baxtor Springs, Kansas
This Route 66 Baxter State Bank building was the second home for the bank. It originally was located on the adjacent building (right), but grew rapidly enough that by 1908 it needed a new and more prominent locatfamous prominent bank facade in this urban fine art photograph was added in 1910. By 1928 the Baxter State Bank was declared the "Strongest Bank in Cherokee County" and was commonly referred to as the "Million Dollar Bank
During the early 1930s, bank robberies were quite frequent. The famous criminal couple "Bonnie and Clyde" robbed stores in Baxt, er Springs, and it is said they robbed the Baxter State bank as well.
The Masons were also located on the upper floor of the original bank. Notice the Mason emblem above the doorway on the right in this photo. There isn't a door there; the entrance leads to a stairway.
