Exposed Rafters Rise Above a Dense Cornfield
The broken roof of this Indiana barn makes an uneven silhouette above the corn. Beside it, two metal grain silos retain their simple rounded shapes. I photographed the scene in 2007, drawn to that close pairing of rough timber and orderly metal within a broad field. The buildings sit low beneath an open sky, leaving the landscape with a spacious, direct feel.
Much of the barn’s structure is exposed. Rafters trace the remaining peak, vegetation clings to the left side and loose timbers extend outward toward the crops. In the foreground, the corn forms a dense band of narrow leaves and upright stalks. I like how that repeated texture contrasts with the barn’s irregular outline. A strip of rough ground along the bottom creates another layer before the eye reaches the buildings.
Black and white gives the scene a strong range of surfaces: pale metal, dark openings, weathered wood and closely packed foliage. Small clouds provide bright accents above the silos, while the clear space around them keeps the composition uncluttered. The photograph feels rooted in its setting, with the cornfield carrying as much visual weight as the damaged building.
This rural Indiana image offers a familiar farm landscape with an individual character. It can bring a quiet sense of the American countryside into a room, particularly for someone drawn to old barns and agricultural subjects. I find its appeal in the details that remain visible, from the roof timbers to the bands around the silos.
