A Small Rowboat Crosses An Expanse Of Warm Ripples
The rower appeared while I was walking along the Buenos Aires waterfront. I watched the boat move across the river and waited until its position felt balanced within the surrounding water. There was very little else in the frame, and that simplicity was what drew me to make the photograph. Captured in 2011, the scene holds the warm evening light through a broad field of small, repeating ripples.
The wooden boat sits low and left of centre, with the rower facing away and the oars extending to either side. One red blade supplies a small, distinct accent among the muted water tones. Around it, the surface shifts between brighter highlights and narrow dark lines. I wanted to leave plenty of room above and beside the boat, so the photograph would retain the scale of a single person within that wide expanse. The ripples are not empty space; their changing pattern gives the whole image its texture.
My eye returns to the boat, then travels outward through those soft variations in light. The oars create a clear horizontal gesture, while the hull points deeper into the water. Together they give the quiet composition a sense of movement without overwhelming it. What stays with me is the timing of that brief encounter, when a passing rower became the focus of an otherwise open view. As river wall art, the photograph brings warm, restrained colour to a living room or reading space. Its small human presence and generous surroundings offer a scene that remains easy to look at over time.
